This week on Reflections from the Keyboard, David Dubal continues his exploration of one of the most enigmatic piano masters, Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli. Born in Brescia, Italy in 1920, Benedetti began taking music lessons when he was three years old. He studied at the Milan Conservatory, and when he won first prize in the Geneva International Competition, he was dubbed “a new Liszt.” Known for his perfectionism and his reclusive behavior, he cancelled concerts often and avoided the recording studio, but many of the recordings he did make are legendary.
On this program, we hear Benedetti in music by Chopin, Mozart, and Debussy, including one of the great examples of impressionism in music, “The Engulfed Cathedral.” Tune in on Thursday at 8pm or Sunday at 10pm to explore and enjoy the profound artistry of Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.
